What to do when you’re not hungry but feel like you need to put something in your mouth because of cravings, stress or anxiety? Obviously, if you’re hungry you should definitely eat something.
If you’re not hungry, the best thing to do would probably be to figure out the reasons behind your urge to eat in the first place and do something about it: for example, improving your ’emotional management’ by feeding your feelings with something else than food, or eating healthier to avoid cravings due to a nutrient deficiency caused by an unbalanced diet.
The following ideas are just quick fixes to fight sudden snacking urges. The last few tips are a bit ‘eccentric’ or just totally weird (like the adult pacifier) but I wanted to be as creative as possible to come up with new things other than the traditional tips like “drink water”, “go for a walk”, “call a friend” or “brush your teeth”.
Drinking flavored teas
Having a broad selection of flavored teas and herbal teas can be a way to satisfy your need for something fancy. Many flavored teas nowadays have delicious (yet artificial) flavors like apple pie, gingerbread, pina colada, caramel, mapple syrup, chocolate cake…
Making flavored coffee or soda using food flavorings and extracts
Mixing a few drops of your favorite flavoring (apple flavoring for example) with sparkling water is a great way to make your own “no-sweetener added” diet soda. A few drops of hazelnut flavoring can transform a regular boring cup of coffee in a fancy starbucks drink.
Chewing gum and blowing big bubbles
Blowing bubbles helps release stress and keep your mouth busy (but you may be getting too much artificial sweeteners if you chew too much gum on a regular basis though).
Chewing licorice roots
Chewing licorice sticks or sugar cane stalks will give you a free jaw workout using all-natural non-processed foods while actually eating very little.
Chewing “Miswak” (peelu tree root)
Miswak is the root of the peelu tree. Pakistani people use miswak as a natural toothbrush, chewing the tip of the stick until brush-like. You can find this product in Pakistani / Indian minimarkets.
Low calorie vegetables, such as celery sticks or cucumber are very difficult to overeat. One large stalk (11”-12” long) of celery is 10 calories. Eating 100 calories of celery (10 stalks!) will take you a little while…
Adding a chew stick topper to pens and pencils
“Chew Stixx Pencil Topper fits any standard pencil and are safe for the teeth. They can lower anxiety levels and increase attention at work or in the classroom”. chewstixx.com
Regressing to babyhood: adult pacifiers
I didn’t know that this product even existed but many different adult-sized pacifiers, consisting of a standard baby pacifier guard but a larger, wider nipple are available online. And bonus: “Studies have shown that pacifier use among adults may cut down or completely eliminate snoring.”
