I think there are around 30 to 40 gyms in Amsterdam’s city center. In a nutshell, here are the different kinds of gyms you can find:
- Low-cost gyms: you can get a gym membership for about 16 euro per month in low-cost gyms. These gyms are usually not a good choice if you want to weight-train. There’re usually mainly machines and very few free weights. If you’re looking for cardio machines, these gyms are the best option since they usually feature many basic cardio machines that take up most of the gym’s space.
The concept of these low-cost gyms is basically to try to get people who won’t go to the gym frequently to sign up. Once these people are signed up and realize they actually don’t go that often, they usually hesitate to cancel their gym membership because it isn’t that expensive even if they don’t show up.
That’s the big business advantage these low-cost gyms have over ‘regular’ gyms with usual membership prices: people who don’t go to the gym hesitate a lot more before canceling their membership because it’s cheaper. They tell themselves “It’s only 16 euro and I might go next week”, whereas people who pay 40 to 60 euro per month won’t hesitate to cancel their membership if they don’t go often enough. The concept of these low-cost gyms is thus: lots of cardio machines, 80% of gym members that never shows up and is paying for the 20% who does go regularly play with the cardio machines like a hamster in a wheel.
- Big chain gyms: Big chain gyms are gyms that offer a bit more services than low-cost gyms but sales is clearly the #1 goal here too. The advantage of chain gyms is that you can train in different locations that belong to the chain. Some chain gyms like Health City have good equipment (free weights, kettelbells and the latest new fitness gadgets) whereas others like Sport City target a broader public and feature only equipment that’s ‘safe’: many machines but no equipment with which gym newbies could easily hurt themselves.
- ‘Neighborhood’ gyms: by ‘neighborhood gyms’ I mean gyms that don’t belong to a chain or a big business group. The atmosphere in these gyms is usually a bit less anonymous than in big chain gyms. The membership prices and services are relatively comparable to big chain gyms, but the equipment is usually a bit older.
- Personal training studios: following the development of low-cost gyms, many personal trainers have decided to open their own studios to avoid working in low-cost gyms or big chain gyms where they usually won’t find many clients that are wealthy enough to afford personal training on a regular basis. These personal trainer studios are gyms where you can’t workout on your own but need to have an appointment with a trainer each time you go. These gyms are best for wealthy busy people who wish to be assisted with their training.
- Martial arts gyms: kickboxing is a popular sport in the Netherlands, particularly among ‘new-Dutch’ people (Dutch people with an immigrant background). There are several martial art gyms in Amsterdam that offers various martial art disciplines. The gym goers are very fit and passionate about their sport. However, there aren’t many female members which makes it difficult to find a training partner with the same fitness level if you’re a woman.
- Cross Fit gym: there are 3 Cross Fit gyms I know of in Amsterdam. One is located far away from the city center (outside Amsterdam actually, not easily accessible if you don’t have a car) www.crossfitamsterdam.nl, and two are located in Amsterdam Zuid (South of Amsterdam): www.mobiliscrossfit.nl and www.reebokcrossfit020.nl. Cross Fit is relatively still very unknown in the Netherlands. Generally Dutch people don’t seem to be big fans of bootcamp classes or high intensity workouts. Many of them are a bit too sissy for very brutal workouts :)
- Yoga & pilates studios: yoga is extremely popular in the Netherlands. Most gyms offer yoga and pilates classes, but strict yogis and pilates aficionados usually prefer going to a studio because studio’s trainers tend to be a lot more experienced and knowledgeable than the average pilates-yoga trainers working at regular gyms.
If you’re a tourist or staying for a short stay in Amsterdam
If you’re looking for a gym offering weekly passes, there aren’t many gyms that offer ‘no-commitment’ options. They basically all want you to commit to some kind of monthly subscription. Health Club Jordaan (www.healthclubjordaan.nl, located in the city center in the Jordaan area) is the only gym I know of with short term memberships for people who are visiting the city.
Most of the time, the majority of gyms offer free day passes to try them out, except the ‘upscale’ gyms (Splash clubs, David Lloyd).
Here are some quick reviews of the few couples of gyms I’ve tried. There is no ‘perfect’ gym anyway: I think the perfect gym is the one which is simply the closest to where you live or to where you work.
Fit for free
There are 3 ‘Fit for free’ gyms in Amsterdam. ‘Fit for free’ offers the cheapest gym memberships, but customer service is kept to a minimum: for example, last time I looked for it they didn’t have any official Facebook or Twitter account. They don’t answer their emails and the only way to reach them is to call their call center that costs 40 cents per minute.
Positive points:
- cheap gym membership
- you can train in 3 different ‘fit for free’ gyms in Amsterdam
Disadvantages:
- no barbells and no smith machine, only dumbbells and weight training machines and a lot of huge cardio machines that take up all the space
- not much space for free weight/dumbbell area in regard to the number of people training
- minimum customer service
- no nice atmosphere, lots of red elements to make the gym look and feel “low cost”
I’d recommend this gym to:
- people who know they won’t be able to go to the gym regularly and who don’t want to pay the price of a normal gym membership in Amsterdam.
- people who want to exercise very occasionally.
Site: www.fitforfree.nl
Akademia
Akademia is a gym located on the Javaplein in East Amsterdam. The particularity of this gym is that it only offers group lessons: you cannot train by yourself, you have to take part in the group lessons offered.
Positive points:
- nice premises, clean, good hygiene
- broad group lesson schedule with many Lesmills lessons (Body Pump, Body Combat etc.)
- enthusiastic and experienced group lesson instructors
- latest model of spinning bikes in the spinning room
- coffee bar “Coffee company” next to the gym to drink a coffee with free wifi
Disadvantages:
- only group classes, you can’t exercise on your own
- no mirrors in the exercise rooms. This can also be seen as a positive point for people who are too self-conscious of the way they look.
I’d recommend this gym to:
- people living in East Amsterdam
- people who are fans of Lesmills group lessons
- people who don’t have enough willpower to exercise on their own, who need a push
- people who might feel intimidated to go to the gym on their own, who are looking for friendly trainers and friendly gym-goers
Site: www.akademiatraining.nl
Sports World
Another gym in East Amsterdam. Type of gym goers: working people, lots of women between 30 and 40 year old and seniors. There aren’t many expats or non-Dutch people in this gym.
Positive points:
- beautiful location in a renovated old factory
- there is a restaurant/café with free wifi
- good hygiene, clean toilets
- big windows (many gyms in Amsterdam don’t have that much day light)
- reception team is very friendly, especially by Amsterdam standards
Disadvantages:
- the atmosphere is a bit anonymous
- despite the many different group lessons, there is no ‘superstar’ group lesson instructor that really stands out and makes me want to come back to his/her class
- they often have sweets or cakes displayed in the restaurant which can be quite demotivating to see when you’re at the gym
- the supporting metallic beams of the ceiling of the old factory on the second floor are “cutting” the weight room a bit and taking space, but that’s also what makes the charm of the location:

I’d recommend this gym to:
- people living in East Amsterdam
- people who want to play squash (there aren’t many gym in Amsterdam with squash facilities)
- people who wants to have a large choice of group lessons
Site: www.sportsworldamsterdam.nl
Health City Amstelstraat
Health City Amstelstraat is medium sized gym located in the city center near the Rembrantplein. Because of its central location, you’re likely to find many expats in this gym.
Positive points:
- latest fitness equipment, gym stays up-to-date with the latest fitness trends
- multicultural team of trainers
Disadvantages:
- they have a male cleaning-person who cleans the ladies’ changing room everyday at 3 pm
I’d recommend this gym to:
- gym rats looking for good equipment
- gay guys
- people looking for personal training services
- expats looking English speaking classes and trainers
- people working or living in the city center / Rembrandtplein area
Site: www.healthcity.nl/all-inclusive/detail/healthcity_amsterdam_all_inclusive_amstelstraat
Sport City Waterlooplein
A big gym with many different group classes and interesting membership prices. Lots of gym newbies / beginners or people going less than 1-2 times per week.
Positive point:
- big gym with friendly customer service
Disadvantages:
- no barbells, only machines and dumbbells
- high numbers of gym members, lots of people on Monday/Tuesday evenings
- no sleeveless top allowed (apparently they don’t want people to show cleavage or shoulder muscles)
- bad spinning bikes in the spinning room
I’d recommend this gym to:
- people who are afraid of a gym filled with muscular guys (won’t find any here)
- people who can exercise outside the gym “rush-hours”
Site: www.sportcity.nl/page/Clubs/A-dam-Waterlooplein/Visuele-clubtour
Sport City Weteringstraat
The smallest gym in Amsterdam. Located in a small building in a small street. Type of gym goers: people living in the area and with jobs like psychologists, artists, freelancers, webdesigners.
Positive points: people working at the reception are friendly, gym is cosy.
Disadvantages: there is a nice atmosphere but not enough space to work-out if you want to do plyometrics and jump around. The gym is too ‘tiny’ for that. Group lesson rooster is limited.
I’d recommend this gym to: people living nearby.
Site: www.sportcity.nl
Health Club Jordaan
A gym located on a sidestreet from the rozengracht in the Jordaan neighborhood. The gym isn’t very big, but offers a wide range of fitness facilities and group classes.
This is the only gym I know of which offers short term memberships for people who are visiting the city. They also have a superfood and natural supplement shop in the gym, with a broad choice of products that can be hard to find in Amsterdam (vegan protein powder, different brands of raw chocolates etc.)
The type of people going to this gym consists of an interesting mix of people living in this area: huppies, hipsters, expats, and active seniors.
Positive points:
- many different pieces of equipment: for example, this is the only gym in Amsterdam where I’ve seen stair masters
- the memberships are reasonably priced: if you choose to go to the gym only in the morning, you pay 35 euro per month
- their group lesson schedule offers a bit more variety than most gyms this size: salsa, kickboxing, belly dancing, in addition to the regular zumba/step/body pump/spinning classes
- the pilates instructors (Margherita & Elize) are master pilates instructors (the kind of instructors you usually find in pilates studios)
Disadvantages:
- There are no windows in the gym except in the yoga room
- The changing rooms are small
I’d recommend this gym to:
- people living nearby
- people who like to try different group lessons on a regular basis
- tourists and people staying for a short stay in Amsterdam
- people looking for quality pilates classes
- people interested in the latest super foods and supplements
Site: www.healthclubjordaan.nl
I’ve also written a more detailed review of this gym here.
Splash Health Club Leidseplein
Type of gym goers in these gym: wealthy people living in the center of Amsterdam. Many expats. Many gay guys, ‘gayest’ gym in Amsterdam. When I visited the Splash club Leidseplein on a Saturday afternoon, I was the only woman in the weight room with about 25 gay guys. I almost thought it was a special hour “for guys only” until I saw another woman training.
Positive points:
- many different weight training machines
- broad group lesson schedule
Disadvantages:
- no free day pass to try the gym, they made me pay more than 10 euro to try it for an afternoon
- pricy gym membership
- very central position in the ‘party center’ of Amsterdam; this area is always crowded.
I’d recommend this gym to:
- gay guys, pretty boys
- fitness fanatics looking for a variety of weight training equipment and machines
- people who like to show off at the gym :)
- wealthy people living in the city center
- expats looking for group lessons in English
- women with children (there is a day care)
Site: www.splashamsterdam.nl
Club Sportive Zuidas
A spacious gym with enough space (rare in Amsterdam), but the location is definitely outside the city center. Gym members are people working in the Zuidas business district.
Positive points: enough space to do walking lunges and free weight exercises
Disadvantages: very crowded on Monday and Tuesday evenings, very quite on weekends
I’d recommend this gym to:
- people working in the Zuidas business district
- single women looking for straight guys working in Finance.

Thanks a lot this is a very precious piece of advice! gilles
Thanks a lot… Really helpful
Thanks Elise for this very useful information and your interesting blog too. I found your blog while researching other fitness centers in Amsterdam. I had been going to Club Sportive Weteringstraat for 6 years but after Sport City took it over this year it went downhill. For those of us with an unpredictable work and travel schedule like me, or anyone who asked for it, CS had a very practical “10-rittenkaart” or what they called “incidental fitness” where you could prepay 10 visits to the club for a discounted price, with no membership subscription. When Sport City bought most of the Club Sportive clubs they ended the incidental fitness program and tried to make everyone buy a full new subscription. Paying 17,50 per visit now just isn’t worth it. The old system worked like a prepaid mobile phone account, and prepaid SIM cards are very popular! But fitness centers still want to lock you into a yearly membership which renews automatically.
Hi! I was going to Club Sportive Weteringstraat too 3 years ago when it was still Club Sportive. It was a very nice little club with great instructors. Yes, it’s a pity this gym was bought by Sport City because it was the best of the several Club Sportive gyms.
is there a gym in Amsterdam that also has a swimming pool?
Many thanks for your reply
Dennis
Hi Dennis, David Lloyd (Overtoom 557, near the Vondelpark) has a swimming pool but it’s really small. There is a big swimming pool in the same building as Sportsworld (Oranjevrijstaatkade 21, in Amsterdam East) but the swimming pool doesn’t belong to the gym. So far as I know I think the few gyms with “big swimming pool included” are all outside the center in the suburbs.
Hi Elise! I just found your blog while looking up healthy desserts and I also live in Amsterdam! I used to go to Clubsportive before it changed to FitforFree (Harlemer Houtounen), then Splash Leidseplein and now I just joined Shape All In Centre on the Van Hallstraat – this gym is GREAT! You can get a day pass and check it out. They have lots of classes, brand new TechnoGym equipment (cardio machines are even online!), they have separate men/women steam room/sauna too. I em enjoying reading your blog! Oh, I love the magere kwark you mention:-)
Hi Emily! I’ve checked their site, seems like a great gym! Thanks for the tip!
Hi, I know this post is a year old, but hopefully someone can help me!
I’m going to Amsterdam for a little over a week and would like to work out…are there any gyms that don’t require a membership?!
Thanks in advance!!
Hi Nana, I don’t like advising you to lie to the gyms’ staff, but this is how most gyms are in Amsterdam: they don’t have weekly memberships but most of them offer a free day pass in the hope that you’ll subscribe a monthly membership. Some gyms don’t even offer a free day pass and will make you pay 15 euro for a day pass, which is a complete rip off, since no gyms in Amsterdam offer fantastic/extraordinary equipment and location that could justify the fact that you have to pay 15 euro to go only once. So just don’t tell them you’re here for a short period of time only and ask for a free day pass :) Use that technique in several different gyms and you’ll be able to workout for free during your short stay.
Great blog.
You may want to change the info on Splash as their Looiersgracht has been sold to this aggressive Kilo Kraker (F4F).
I loved the atmosphere at this first Splash, with some members working out for 20 years in that building.
They had special rates for airline staff.
Have you checked-out the JORDAAN GYM?
Very nice staff, reasonable price, and I remember that their membership rules were reasonably flexible.
Nancy
Hi Nancy, thanks for the info, I didn’t know this yet! Fitforfree is ‘invading’ so many gyms in the Netherlands… Such a pity!
Just moved to Amsterdam and was looking for a gym- do you know if all offer classes only in Dutch, or are there some with English classes?
It depends on the gym’s location. Gyms that are located in the city center usually have many expat gym goers, so trainers usually speak both languages during classes. Don’t hesitate to tell the trainer you just arrived and don’t speak Dutch, and he/she will probably make it a point to teach the whole lesson in English, even if you’re the only one who doesn’t speak Dutch.
Hi Elise, thanks for this data, much appreciated : )
I’ve been today at Health City having a look , although now I found your recommendation for gay guys and started wondering I might be missing something: did you just find more gay public than in others or would you tag it as a predominantly gay gym? Of course no issues with that but for every day life it may be a difference.
cheers.
Hi Gui, I wouldn’t tag Health City Amstelstraat as a predominantly gay gym. Taken into account this gym’s location and the price of the gym membership, it does target a high income public living in the city center. That’s why you’ll certainly find way more gays than in a low-cost gym located in the suburbs. But the only predominantly gay gym I know of would be Splash Leidseplein. However, the public also totally depends on the time you go to the gym: if you go to Splash Leidseplein on a tuesday morning at 10 am, you’re much more likely to see more stay-at-home moms than any pretty boys :) If you’re not gay, there is really nothing to worry about (like for example worrying about guys looking at you in the shower or trying to hit on you. It happened once to my boyfriend but he just took it as a compliment). Dutch guys in general (gay or straight) are never very flirty or obnoxious.
Dear,Where we can buy used(secondhand)fitness equipment in Holland?Many Thanks,Sportix
Here for example http://www.shfitness.nl/refurbshop/contact_us.php (found this address googling “secondhand fitness equipment in Holland” and looking around a bit)
Hi, moving to Amsterdam next month… where can I crossfit… any places open up since this article was written?
THanks!
Great, informative article!
Hi Chris, there still aren’t any other new places besides the only Crossfit gym located in the suburbs (the address is Madeliefstraat 16 2153 EV Nieuw Vennep). It’s a pity but I’d say that the biggest current trend in the Netherlands is all about mainstream low-cost/low-service kinds of gyms.
Update about crossfit gyms in Amsterdam: there are two other gyms beside the one in Nieuw Vennep: both are located in Amsterdam Zuid: mobiliscrossfit.nl & reebokcrossfit020.nl
Hello Elise,
This is amazing information, thank you so much.
I am a Canadian and I own a company here on the West Coast of Canada (Victoria, BC) called Bellyfit.
We currently have hundreds of women teaching Bellyfit® classes across North America and we are now expanding into the European Market. I am interested in booking a Bellyfit Instructor Training Course in Amsterdam, preferably at a well respected, high profile chain that has a focus on mind/body workouts.
Can you recommend a gym brand that has locations in Amsterdam and across the Netherlands?
Thank you so much in advance for your help and please join us as my personal guest if you are interestes in women’s holistic fitness.

Hi Alice, a high profile chain would be http://www.healthcity.nl. They have a good network of gyms in the Netherlands (www.healthcity.nl/ons-aanbod/clubfinder) and are also present in other European countries (Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, France, Italy and Spain). On their site they say they have 180 clubs in total. It’s a Dutch company which was founded 25 years ago. Their headquarters are located in the Netherlands, here is their contact information: http://www.healthcity.nl/over-healthcity/contact-opnemen-met-healthcity
David loyd at the overtoom is about 90 euros a month. Spacious and a great steam bath included.
Thanks a lot for this post! I’ll staying in Amsterdam for 3 weeks during January and I’m thinking of getting a one month subscription somewhere. Most important to me is access to free weights and rowing machine. Is there any particular gym you would recommend? I’m willing to spend up to 70-80 € or so. My flat is in west Amsterdam, 15 minutes with the tram from the city center.
Hi Jimmy, if you don’t mind going to the city center, I would recommend Health City Amstelstraat or Splash because that’s where you’re most likely to find many English-speaking people or expats. If you prefer a gym that’s very close to your apartment, any normal gym should have free weights and a rowing machine, except all the low-cost chain gyms. You can usually recognize low-cost chain gyms by their name: “Fit for free”, “Fit 4 less”, “Basic fit” etc.
Great! I’ll check them out first thing next week, thanks for the quick response!
Hi Elise!
Thanks for the useful and detailed information :) I just moved from Rotterda to Amsterdam and staying close to Waterlooplein so I checked the Sportcity and Health City near by. I am a bit undecided between the two, tha advantage of Sprtcity is that they allow to cancel monthly the subscription (I am not sure I’ll be staying in the flat where I am now for the whole year) whereas in the Heath City there is the possibility to get a special offer for 6 month for students.
A part from prices and contracts which gym would you advise between these two? I am looking mainly for classes and spinning (if possible to add some yoga but I suppose yoga studios would be much better for that). And I need English classes and possibile an non only Dutch enviroment!
thanks a lot in advance :)
Cheers,
Giulia
Hi Giulia, can you get some free passes to try both gyms before committing? I tried Sportcity Waterlooplein for spinning and I really didn’t like the yellow bikes they had in their spinning room. The bikes felt cheap and uncomfortable. I also think you might find more English-speaking classes at Health City.
Yeah will go for a free trial today at sport city and trying the spinning class, and will try and go to Health City some time this week as well.. let’s see then!
thanks ;)
Hi guys,
I just started working out with a very nice Pilates teacher! She give classes to small groups (min 2 max 7 persons). She has her own studio near by The Haarlemersquare. I love the fact that she is not oly a certified instructor but also a physical therapist! So the best of both worlds to firm and take proffesional care of your body!
Classes are on Tuesdays 17.30 – 18.30 and Saturday 13.00 – 14.00! Hope to see you there!
I have a question… I lived in Amsterdam for a year and am now in Amersfoort. Are you familiar with this area at all? I can’t find a gym that opens before 9am for the life of me, and I can’t go so late. Suggestions?
Hi Betsy, no sorry I’ve never tested any gym in Amersfoort. But LifeCity Amersfoort opens at 7:30 during the week. Or Club Pellikaan opens at 6 am which is pretty early for a Dutch gym.
Hey,
thank you for this useful piece of information.
Do you know how much the menbership fee of the Club Sportive Zuidas is?
I will start to work in this area next month and cannot find any information about fees on their website.
Thanks!
Hi Isa, they indeed don’t have any information about prices on their site. Maybe try to contact them via facebook? But there are many other gyms in that area, so I’d suggest you ask your colleagues when you start working there. Furthermore, many companies in Zuidas buy group memberships for their employees.
This is where I go. I pay about 45 euros, but I think my colleague pays about 40 euros or so.
Dear Elise,
Thanks for this great and quite helpful blog. You saved many people’s time and money. I am considering to go gym “akademia” since I really get bored when I train alone, I thought the group trainings is a better option for me.
I am not a Dutch, so in this case the environment of the gym is quite important for me. So would you consider Akademia as a multiculturel gym? Are the people friendly and english speaker?
And my last question is what kind of group lessons are they focusing on more?
Best..
Hi Yuc, yes Akademia is a great option if you want to do group trainings only and if you live in Amsterdam Oost. They focus on group lessons from LesMills (Body Pump, Body Attack, Body Balance, RPM, Sh’bam). You will not find as many “non-Dutch” people as in the city center, but that shouldn’t be a big problem -especially for this kind of group lessons that mostly rely on the rhythm of the music to demonstrate the moves. Their site isn’t available in English, but they say that it costs 15 euro to try a class. They sometimes have open-door events with free try-out classes. I’d suggest you go visit the gym to get a better idea of the atmosphere!
Hi Elise…
Just found your blog and it is very helpful :)
I’m a gay student in Amsterdam for another 5 months and as you understand prices really matter for me.. I live very close to the center of Amsterdam so transportation shouldn’t be a problem..
- What is the cheap-average price for a gym membership for the time that I’m gonna be here? (and do you know which gyms offer that?)
- It is really important for me to find a gym that offers a nutrition program since I am a bit too thin and would like to start a regular healthy diet. Is that possible without paying too much?
So all in all, I’m looking for a gym that is: cheap and has a nutrition program [a gay scene wouldn't hurt though that's not as important]
Thank you in advance for your reply.. Looking forward to hearing from you
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Chris,
- The cheapest gyms you can find in Amsterdam are “Fit for free” and “Basic Fit”. Their membership costs around 16 euro, but they’re pretty unclear about how long you have to commit. “Fit for free” even offers a 10-euro membership if you’re able to go workout outside the gym rush-hours. These low-cost gyms don’t offer any programs.
- Most of the gyms that aren’t “low-cost” gyms usually offer a free monthly appointment with a trainer to talk about your goals.
- There are gyms that have special prices for students. Fresh fitness for example offers a special price for students (a 10 euro reduction) and guidance with free appointments included. (Google-translate this page: http://www.fresh-fitness.nl/het-begeleidingstracject-van-fresh) But I’m afraid the membership is still going to be too expensive nonetheless because it’s only a 5-month thing.
- You might wanna try to ask for a special offer at Health City Amstelstraat. This is a nice gym with a bit of gay scene. They say on their site that they have special prices for students but they don’t give any details: http://www.healthcity.nl/ons-aanbod/healthcity-amsterdam-amstelstraat-all-inclusive/ledenvoordeel
- Finally, if you’re looking a full nutrition program, any kind of full program is going to be quite pricey for a student budget. I’d suggest that you try saving money by buying a good fitness book and reading on your own about food and nutrition. I can also help you for free. Many people ask me questions on Tumblr. They’re usually young girls with weight loss goals but I wouldn’t mind helping a different target group for a change :)
Chris,
I’ve forgotten a very simple solution: try to see if your university offers any access to a sport facility. This is an old article but you may be able to find a similar offer: http://www.sportcentrum.vu.nl/nl/nieuws-agenda/nieuwsarchief/2012/02.asp
Hi Elise!
Thank you soooo much for your suggestions…
I have 4 gyms in mind now that I will visit once my bike gets fixed :D
I guess a full nutrition program is something I’ll have to get once I return home…
I’m at the UvA, so I’m not sure if the VU offer affects me…
USC is my last option if I don’t find anything better/cheaper because I haven’t heard a lot of good things about it :S
Finally, I would like to thank you for your offer on nutrition advise.. if I don’t find anything I might actually need to ask for some pointers if that’s ok :)
The gyms I’m planning to visit are: Splash HealthClub , Healthcity, Sportcity and Fresh, with USC as a back-up option..
Thank you again for your help!
Cheers,
Chris
Hi Elise
Thanks so much for such a detailed and extensive review !! Its really very helpful. If weren’t for your article wounld have gone ahead and joined Fit for Free the other day but luckily i didnt when i found out that its mostly suited for a cardio workout. I have been in Amsterdam for a while now and have been thinking about joining a Gym for a while but I’m looking for Weight traning rather than a cardio workouts. Would you be able to suggest me a good gym for weight training close to Overtoom/Vondelpark area? also which is not very expensive :)
Thanks a Lot
Plabon
Hi Plabon,
This area of the city isn’t cheap: that’s where you find the most expensive gyms (David Lloyd, Personal trainer studios)! I’m afraid you’ll have to go a little bit further (de Baarsjes, Westindische buurt areas) to find a gym membership under 60 euro: for example: http://www.brightsidefitness.nl (37 euro per month for a year membership) and http://www.fitness-centrum.nl (20 euro per month).
Thanks So Much Elise for your reply!! I will surely check these ones out!!
Have a nice Weekend !
Cheers
Plabon
thanks very much for this comprehensive overview, Elise. Will definitely give Health City Amsterdam a try. Unforuntaely I don’t really agree that SportsWorld staff was friendly (not in a genuine sense like you would have at any gym in North America) or that the hygiene was stellar. In fact I made several complaints about the poor hygiene in the mens’ change room. What may have been perceived as overly friendly staff was forced friendliness and only remained friendly as long as you have no issues or problems. There was never anyone who could deal with membership/incasso issues. That person was very conveniently only available by phone. There’s a reason the law was changed recently to protect people from getting ripped off by gyms like SportsWorld…
Hi Michael, I wrote “friendly by Amsterdam standards” :) Meaning they smile, say hello and goodbye, which is already pretty exceptional! Some receptionists at other gyms are too busy facebooking or chatting with other gym employees to even notice you. But I understand what you mean, this can also feel ‘fake-friendly’.
About the men’s changing room: as a woman I’ve never taken a look other there :)
I’ve also heard other people having membership/incasso issues with SportsWorld. But the worst of the worst when it comes to membership/incasso issues remains Fit for free (https://forum.www.trosradar.nl/viewtopic.php?f=81&t=60397&start=20). The bigger the gym chain, the more difficult it is to get out of a bad contract.
Dear Elise,
Great overview! I live in the southern part of Amsterdam and looking for a gym in that area. Do you have any experience with the gym at Spa Zuiver?
Cheers
Fong
Hi Fong, no sorry I haven’t tried Spa Zuiver! But judging by the reviews they have on Trip Advisor it sounds like a great place!
Hi Elise,
Do you know any gyms that have a one month membership? I am working over there for August and looking for a gay-friendly gym (without too many posers) and have free weights. Have you got any recommendations?
Hi Jordan, Health Club Jordaan offers short-term memberships. The gyms goers there are mostly yuppies, hipsters and expats. For a bigger gay scene, Health City Amstelstraat or Splash, but they might be more expensive (and I’m not sure they offer short-term memberships).
Thanks so much – your site is awesome and so helpful!
Hey Elise!
I am a 20 years old french student I am going to amsterdam for 6 months and i would like to have your advice, I am looking for a room in DE PIJPE disctrict so I wanted to know if there’s a good gym in this area not too expensive ?
Thank you !
Hi Lisa, I’m wondering why you’re looking for a room in de Pijp. It’s an expensive area (yuppies/hipsters living there) and there’s no university nearby. There are gyms in de Pijp but since it isn’t a cheap area, you won’t find cheap gyms. For example you’d still have to pay 40 euro per month (student price) for this gym called Fresh Fitness.
Hi Elise, I am moving to to an area near Akademia soon, but Akademia looks like an expensive gym, but I’d love to join for the group classes, I just can’t seem to find any membership price on its webpage. Are there any affordable gyms within easy cycling distance of Akademia? I am mainly looking for a rowing and cycling machine + basic weights. Thank you for the great blog! It’s really helpful.
Hi Anna, if you’re not a student, the cheapest membership you can get at Akademia costs 40 euro per month. You can find their prices here: http://www.akademiatraining.nl/lidmaatschappen. (Copy-paste the content in Google translate if necessary). To see all the gyms in that area, go to maps.google.com, type in “Sportschool Amsterdam” and zoom in on Amsterdam Oost. I think the Mirror Centre near Muiderpoortstation (mirrorcentre.nl) and ultimatefitnessamsterdam.nl may be cheap, but try to read/translate their consumer reviews on Google to see what kind of atmosphere to expect. If you’re looking for very cheap, the nearest low-cost chain gym is Fit for Free Valkenburgerstraat, which is a bit farther away.
Hi Elise,
We will be in Amsterdam in June for about 4 days and would like to find a decent gym close to where we are staying (Jan Willem Brouwersstratt 25). I did some research on gyms close by and am amazed at how many have bad reviews. Not interested in classes, mostly free weights and machines.
Thanks
Hi Barbara, have you also found http://www.personalhealthclub.nl (Breitnerstraat 4) during your research? It’s located near the Hilton hotel. The hotel’s guests have access to this gym, so I assume it must be a very nice gym!
Hiya,
thanks a lot, great site!!
Just wanted to let you know that the link to fitforfree.nl on the top there is incorrect, as you left out a r in free…
FYI
Hi Anniken, thank you for letting me know!
