Yesterday I discovered two new chocolate shops in Amsterdam: Van der Donk fine chocolates and Chocolatl.

Van der Donk fine chocolates
A beautiful store located 10 minutes away from the Rijksmuseum. The store is run by two guys, Pimm and Marcel van der Donk (I suppose they are married together, Pimm is Dutch and Marcel is German). The store and its owners look stylish and elegant. Both guys know what they are talking about when it comes to chocolate and they seem very professional, experienced business owners.
Pimm and Marcel make a selection of fresh chocolates themselves. They also sell chocolate bars/products from different countries, tea, coffee, Dutch cocoa, beer and wine. Like drug dealers, they know their product is so good they’re willing to give a little away for free upfront. They know you’ll be back for more -with money. So after tasting one of their fresh chocolate truffle with white chocolate / limoncello filling they make every saturday, I ended up buying a little box of chocolates as well as a bar of dark chocolate.

I bought this box for about 5 euro. I really loved the perfect size of these chocolates: they are smaller than usual, but it’s really the perfect portion size for me to enjoy a different chocolate flavor every two bites. Usually I’m not a big fan of white chocolate (too sweet and a bit flavorless) but the little white chocolate champagne ball was delicious. Cute little box was empty two minutes after leaving the store though :)

Chocolatl is a new store located in the Jordaan district and run by an American/Canadian couple. Erik is very enthusiastic and talks about chocolate like a sommelier talks about wine. He won’t hesitate to spend 20 minutes talking with you, making you try different chocolates until you find the one you love. Unlike Van der donk chocolate, they don’t make their own chocolate, but they sell many brands of fine chocolate bars and they have a little corner where you can sit and enjoy a coffee, thee or hot chocolate.
